Planning events may come natural to someone who is organized and focuses on details. If you enjoyed planning your own wedding and would like to do it for others, maybe a career as a wedding consultant is for you. Start small and run your wedding consultant business out of your own home. Much of the actual work will have to be done at many different locations, so be prepared to travel around your city to plan the perfect wedding day for the bride. With this career, you will get to enjoy helping others plan the most important day of their lives.
Establish your business. Write a business plan to indicate how different aspects of your business will be handled and set goals for yourself. Business plan templates can be found at the Small Business Association website or local office. They also have professionals that can help answer your questions about taxes, licenses and regulations for operating a business in your state.
Create your wedding consultant business name. If you plan on using your own name, then you will not have to register it with your state, but if you will be operating under a company name, then you will be required to register that you will be doing business as the new name with your secretary of state office. This way you will be able to legally use your business name on all stationery and marketing materials.
Construct your rate plans and contract agreements you will have clients sign. Contracts will protect you when it comes time for the couple to pay for the services that were rendered. It will also leave the couple with a list of what they can expect from you.
Get certified. Showing couples that you maintain a certification will allow them to rest easy that you have had some training and experience in your field. Some wedding consultant certifications online are the Associate of Bridal Consultants, Association of Certified Professional Wedding Consultants and Weddings Beautiful Worldwide.
Create relationships with local wedding vendors. As a wedding consultant you will have to book appointments and recommend services and vendors to the bride. Make a list of all of the wedding vendors in your area and schedule a meeting with them. Become familiar with what they offer and what budgets they target. Ask about discounts if you bring them a certain amount of service per year. The more you network within the industry the better you will feel about recommending someone.
Promote yourself. Start a website displaying your contact information, services and testimonials from brides. Advertise in any local wedding magazines and be a part of any local wedding events to find potential couples to work with. Become a trusted resource among the community for wedding planning.
